What is a backlink?

A backlink is when you earn a link from one page on a website to that points to another page on your website. Backlinks can either be internal or external, and both are important.

External Links

External links are those in which another website has linked to a page on your website. You have very limited control over getting these, because it’s up to those other websites whether they want to link to you or not. It depends on whether they like your content, if your website will help their visitors and if it supports whatever content they have on their own website.

You can think of external links as referring to your website for support on whatever they’re talking about on their own page.

Internal Links

The other type of backlink that is important is internal backlinks. This happens when when you link from one of your pages to another page on your own website.

You have complete control over this, and this is important when it comes to your site structure because the more internal links that a particular page has, the more Google looks at it as being important and more authoritative.

As a result, this helps your engagement metrics, such as your bounce rate and time on site.

Internal back links also help establish your website’s information hierarchy. Let’s look at something like cornerstone content.Cornerstone content is the content you want to be known for and it consists of the pages or posts you want to rank highest in the search engines.

For example, you may have some sort of guide on a particular topic on your website, and then you create other supporting content or pages on your website that you interlink.

Another thing this internal linking does is that it ensures Google’s bots (or spiders, or whatever you want to call them!) crawl your website because that’s what they do… they follow links.

The more links you have it within your website, the more likely they are to crawl your website.
If you have an orphan page on your website, that is, a page without any links to it or out of it, it can be easy for Google to miss.
